Our Faculties

Subject offerings at Beerwah State High School are organised around nine faculties. Each of these faculties is led by a Head of Department who is responsible for the quality of teaching, learning and assessment within their area of responsibility.

Business Education and Information Technology Communications

Students are able to study Enterprise Education and Junior Computer Studies in Years 9 and 10 and in Years 11 and 12 can select from Accounting, Business Communication and Technology, Legal Studies, Information Processing Technology and Business Organisation Management.


English is a compulsory subject in Years 8 to 10 and in Years 11 and 12 either English or English Communications must be studied. Spanish is compulsory in Year 8 and is an optional subject from Year 9 to 12. Film and Television may be studied in Years 11 and 12.

Health and Physical Education

Health and Physical education is a compulsory subject in Year 8 and 9 and an optional subject in Year 10. In Year 11 and 12, Health Education, Physical Education and Recreation Pursuits are offered.

Home Economics

All students study Home Economics for one semester in Year 8 and it then becomes an optional subject in Years 9 to 12. Food, Production and Technology can be selected in Year 9 and 10 followed by Hospitality Practices In Year 11 and 12. Early Childhood Practices may also be selected in Years 11 and 12.

Industrial Technology

All students study Craft, Design and Technology and Graphics for one semester in Year 8. In Year 9 and 10 students may select Wood Craft, Design and Technology or Metal Craft, Design and Technology. Graphics and Technology Studies may be studied from Year 9 to Year 12. Students in Year 11 and 12 are able to also select from Industrial Skills – Engineering and Industrial Skills – Practical Applications.


Mathematics is compulsory for all students from Year 8 to 12. In Years 11 and 12 students may select from Mathematics A, Mathematics B or Prevocational Mathematics according to the level of difficulty that they wish to study. In Years 11 and 12, students also have the option of selecting Mathematics C.


Science is compulsory for all students from Years 8 to 10. In Year 11 and 12 students four subjects to select from if they wish to continue studying Science. Students may select one or more from Biology, Chemistry, Science in Practice or Physics.

Social Science

Study of Society and Environment is compulsory in Years 8 and 9. In Year 10 students must select one of either History, geography or Study of Society. In Year 11 and 12 students have the opportunity to select from Ancient History, Modern History, Geography or Tourism Issues.

The Arts

In Year 8, students study Visual Art for one semester and Performing Arts for one semester. In Year 9 and 10, students may select from Visual Art, Speech and Drama, Dance and Music, while in Year 11 and 12 students have the option of Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Art or Visual Art Practice.
