Music Excellence Program

Beerwah State High School offers an exciting Music Excellence Program to cater for the needs of talented music students. This is a three-year program running from Year 8 through to Year 10.

This program is an important part of Beerwah State High School’s commitment to the pursuit of artistic and academic excellence.

It is expected that participating students will have a pre-requisite knowledge of basic music theory and are competent on at least one instrument. Students who are accepted into the program participate in the school’s Instrumental Music Program and join at least one of the bands/choir.

Music Excellence is studied as a subject for three 70-minute periods in a week. In the middle school years (Year 8 and 9), the class stays together. In the transition to the senior school in Year 10, Music Excellence is studied as one of the six senior subjects that students select. Study of Music in Years 11 and 12 is encouraged, but is not compulsory.

This program offers:-

• Advanced aural training
• Advanced musicianship/theory skills
• Preparation for AMEB practical and musicianship/theory examinations.
• Advanced ensemble work
• Sight reading skills Compositional skills
• Vocal skills
• Solo practical skills
• An in-depth study of music history
• Introduction to 20th century and 21st century music.

The ensembles available at Beerwah High include
• Glass House Coalition Concert Band
• Wind Ensemble
• Stage Band
• Rock Bands
• Guitar Ensembles
• Vocal Ensembles.

These ensembles play regularly throughout the year at school and community events and also participate in music competitions.

Entry to the program is through an audition and interview process.

Athletics Excellence Program

Beerwah State High School offers an exciting Athletics Excellence Program to cater for the needs of talented athletes and sports students. This is a three-year program running from Year 8 through to Year 10.

This program is an important part of Beerwah State High School’s commitment to the pursuit of sporting excellence.

It is expected that participating students will have a pre-requisite level of competence in sporting activities, as well as, at least a satisfactory academic and behavioural report from their primary school.

Athletics Excellence is studied as a subject for three 70-minute periods in a week. In the middle school years (Year 8 and 9), the class stays together. In the transition to the senior school in Year 10, Athletics Excellence is studied as one of the six senior subjects that students select. Study of Physical Education in Years 11 and 12 is encouraged, but is not compulsory.

 

This program offers:-

• Fitness testing
• Goal setting
• Triathlon
• Fitness (physical conditioning).
• Athletic skill development
• Modified games and sports
• Time management and study skills.

Although Athletics is a broad focus, a broad range of sports and fitness conditioning is covered to ensure each student reaches his/her sporting potential. The school works in conjunction with the University of the Sunshine Coast, accessing specialist facilities and staff.

This program has contributed to a high level of success in athletics competition with the school being Sunshine Coast Central Zone Athletics Champions for the past twelve years in a row.

Entry to the program is through a testing program and review of academic and behaviour reports from primary school.
