20th consecutive District Athletics win for Beerwah SHS

14/08/2014
Winning the Central Zone District Athletics has become somewhat of a tradition at Beerwah State High School. However, this year saw Beerwah gunning for their 20th consecutive win and the pressure was felt by staff and students alike. The stage was set and the first day of the carnival saw Beerwah begin the day with a number of outstanding performances. The athleticism of the team resulted in a lead of 126 points at the end of day one. Before the second day of competition had even started it was made very clear that Maroochydore State High School were hot on our heels and had intentions to steal our coveted Districts trophy. The Beerwah Team rallied and broke a number of records along the way; Rowan Sutton’s 6.99 m Long Jump and an incredible 13.84 metres in the Triple Jump were among the standout performances. The Chalmers boys continued their dominance of the open age group even though they were both battling illness.
As with every year, the final event of the competition, the relays were a chance for all teams to come together and conclude the carnival. This year, the dedicated professional Beerwah Staff had put a number of hours into practicing relay changes, as this has not been a strong suit of the team in previous outings. This practice proved to be perfect as the Beerwah Team dominated the relays and finished in style.  The relay wins cemented the victory and Beerwah had once again shattered the Maroochydore dream.
Beerwah had scored the biggest winning margin in recent history of 243 points ahead of their nearest rival. They were also clear winners of the ‘Percentage’ trophy as well as ‘Overall Boys Champions and Overall Girls Champions’. This was the final Central District 13 to 19 years Athletics Carnival as next year will see the carnival structure change with the inclusion of Year 7 in the secondary school setting.  A very big congratulations to Beerwah State High School Athletics Team and, in particular, to all the staff and students who have made this remarkable achievement possible over the last 20 years.   Well done Beerwah State High School!
