Students with a disability

The national data collection will count students who have been identified as receiving an adjustment to address a disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (the DDA). The DDA can be accessed from the ComLaw website at www.comlaw.gov.au.

Students with a disability

The Summit on Inclusive Education defined inclusive education as ‘a process of responding to the uniqueness of individuals, increasing: their presence, access, participation, and achievement in a learning society’. The Education Services Department at Beerwah State High School supports the delivery of inclusive education by providing quality support and services to Students with disabilities, teachers and parents. This support enhances the learning and teaching experienced by all students, regardless of circumstance.

Education Services staff support students through the following:

• allocate an individual case manager to all students with a verified disability.
• plan co-operatively with staff, parents and students to develop individual education programs and flexible schooling options that enhance curriculum   access, learning opportunities and post school options.
• implement specialist programs that cater for the disability specific needs of individual students.
• provide in-class teacher aide support to assist with curriculum access.
• adjust learning and assessment conditions and / or criteria to meet the needs of individual students.
• promote an inclusive education agenda through professional development of staff

Specialist program options include:

• Core literacy and numeracy classes
• Tutorial classes to assist with the completion of assessment tasks
• Tutorial classes to assist with VET qualifications and TAFE courses
• Life skills education including independent living skills
• Community access programs
• Catering programs
• Gardening and nursery programs
• Fine and gross motor programs, including model making and gym work.
• Photography and art classes
• Information Communication Technology programs including a Certificate I in Information Technology
• Individual therapy programs i.e. speech language, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
• Social skills groups
• Relationship education
• Supervised work skills placements and work experience options
• Disability specific study in work education including a Certificate I Work Readiness or a Certificate I Work Education
