Nationally Consistent Collection of Data for students with a disability

The NCCD is an annual collection of information about Australian school students with disability. The NCCD enables schools, education authorities and governments to better understand the needs of students with disability and how they can be best supported at school.

Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (the Standards), Australian students with disability must be able to access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers. To ensure this, students with disability may receive adjustments to access education, based on the professional judgement of teachers, in consultation with the student and/or their parents, guardians or carers.

Parents and carers can find additional information regarding the NCCD in the factsheet for parents and carers Fact sheet for parents, guardians and carers

Universal supports

All students have access to quality differentiated learning, across every subject. However, sometimes, students with a disability require additional supports so that they can access their learning alongside their similar aged peers. In these cases, students may require focussed or intensive supports.

Through education services, students are provided with tools, strategies and supports based on their individual needs in consultation with the student, their parent/carer and school staff.

 Focussed supports

  • Consultation with student and parent/carer to ensure students have access to the induvial supports and adjustments they need to access the school learning environment and their curriculum.
  • Co-teaching classes for English, Mathematics or Science. Co-taught classes benefit from having two teachers in the classroom every lesson. This is typically a curriculum specialist and a special education specialist
  • Additional resources such as a teacher aide in core classes to support the implementation of student adjustment tools and strategies
  • Access to social/emotional strategies and tools to support students' self-regulation

Intensive supports

 Junior Secondary student supports include:

  • Co-teaching classes for English, Mathematics or Science. Co-taught classes benefit from having two teachers in the classroom every lesson. This is typically a curriculum specialist and a special education specialist
  • Access to small class intensive English and Mathematics
  • Access to assistive technologies such as learning how to use talk-to-text
  • Social skilling: which may include gardening and nursery experiences, cooking, life skills, art classes and relationship education

 Senior Secondary student supports include:

  • Support access to assist with VET qualifications and TAFE courses
